Upstream is a 100% free workbook, developed by the Ministry of Education in Malaysia, to help Filipino students prepare for their English A2 examinations. It contains over 1000 questions which are designed to be similar to the format and level of difficulty found in the real examination. The idea behind this project is that it will help close the gap in learning between Filipino students and their counterparts in other countries where English is not considered a mother tongue. The Ministry hopes that by encouraging Filipino students to continue learning English after they graduate from high school, they will have better opportunities in life, both locally and abroad. Upstream is designed to help students improve their English grammar and reading skills by testing them on the most commonly used and tested areas of English. The questions and answers in Upstream follow a standardized test paper format which makes it easy for teachers and students to understand how the questions should be answered. The lessons in Upstream use a conversational style that is easy to understand, with minimal use of complex vocabulary words. This, coupled with the fact that most of the sentences are short and simple, makes learning easier for Filipino students who do not have a thorough grasp of English grammar or those who lack confidence when writing or speaking in English.
B. Listening Exercises Section A contains a variety of listening exercises that assess the student's ability to understand spoken English. These exercises help students become familiar with everyday conversations, and they help students develop their listening comprehension skills. There are 30 exercises in total, covering different types of conversations such as those about hobbies, interests and daily routines. These conversations are accompanied by pictures to give pupils a visual aid as they listen.
C. Reading Exercises Section B contains a number of reading exercises designed to assess the student’s ability to understand written English. There are exercises on the following topics: The exercises all begin with a dialogue which is followed by a reading passage. The questions which follow are based on the dialogue and the reading passage. These exercises test the student's ability to understand spoken English, as well as their knowledge of commonly used everyday expressions, regular words and proper use of punctuation marks.
D. Writing Exercises Section C contains exercises that test the student’s ability to write short sentences using proper grammar structures. There are 14 different activity types ranging from review of basic grammar structures to more current structures. The writing exercises are organized into the following sections: The questions that follow are based on the dialogue or reading passage that immediately follows. These exercises help students develop their grammar and punctuation used in short sentences.
E. Basic Vocabulary Exercises This section contains a variety of basic vocabulary exercises designed to give students English word recognition skills using visual, auditory and multi-sensory methods. There are 28 different types of exercise included in the Basic Vocabulary section, covering a range of topics such as food, family and school activities. The following exercise types are covered:
